21st September

The club is now entering it’s 6th year and we are very excited for the season ahead, with Philip Hobbs training a TROC horse for the first time.

He has trained over 2500 career winners, has the services of the current Champion jockey and is based in Somerset, so he ticks all of the boxes for us. Having spoken to him over the last month or so, we have come to an arrangement and I have to say it is a very impressive set up, including an equine pool etc. We also have jockey links there with Micheal Nolan who rode our only winner at Taunton on Prince Mahler. He has a full compliment of horses this season and indeed the stable is flying, with a treble and double at Newton Abbot recently and Contented scoring at Worcester at 14/1.

Next up is the horse..he is called At Its Own Expense, he is a four old chestnut gelding who has had 1 run in the Tattersalls Ireland Cheltenham Sale Maiden Point To Point at Ballysteen. He was backward and finished 5th of 6th finishers. The winner was sold to Evan Williams for 180,000 euros after, the 2nd won next time out and didn’t reach his reserve at 75K euros at the next sale, and the others in the race were purchased as 3 year olds for between 43K-52K euros, as you can see he was surrounded by some pretty decent stock. It was all a bit quick for him and they decided to give him a Summer at grass and go again this season. He came over from Ireland with Philip’s 2nd assistant Darren and is currently in the early stages of training. He is showing a bit of speed, and Philip’s view is that he looked as though he didn’t stay the 3 miles (his breeding suggests that should be the case) and he needed the Summer to develop. The plan is to take in a Bumper and then progress onto Novice hurdles and see where that takes us. The main interest here is that we have a dream, he could be anything and we have never been in a position to get involved with a horse of this value and unknown potential. It could go all pear-shaped, but ‘faint heart never won fair lady’ and we are giving ourselves the opportunity to go on a different journey.

The club as in previous years will run from Nov to April, cost £575 all inclusive and be limited to 35 members. This involves stable visits, entry when your horse runs, 4 complimentary Taunton Racecourse tickets, a share of Club profits from the season plus more… For full details please contact Martin on 07831 752056 or email him at businessclub@tauntonracecourse.co.uk.
